Artists, bloggers, entrepreneurs, sports stars and many more rubbed shoulders at the House of Lords for the launch of the Shaw Trust Disability Power List 100 2019 on Tuesday (8 October). Baroness Jane Campbell of Surbiton DBE was announced as number one on the Power List 100. She has fought for equal rights for disabled people for as long as she can remember – from challenging special school segregation as a child, to public demonstrating and arrests, and now advocates for disabled people in the House of Lords. She’s been a leading voice of the disability community since the 1980s, driven by a fierce passion for equality and human rights, but most importantly a love of her community and a hatred of injustice.
The top 10 also includes:
- Kush Kanodia, Social Entrepreneur
- Lee Ridley (Lost Voice Guy), Comedian
- Andrew Bright, Head of Development, Thera Trust
- Caroline Casey, Social Entrepreneur, Valuable 500
- Dr Gregory Burke, AccessAble
- Jane Hatton, Evenbreak
- Justin Levene, Activist and Wheelchair Athlete
- Lucy Watts, Health Advocate and Activist
- Paul Smyth, Barclay’s Head of Digital Accessibility
The annual publication lists the 100 most influential disabled people in the UK. Nearly 200 nominations were received for the 100 places. The Disability Power List 100 is compiled by an independent judging panel, chaired by Creator and Founder of PurpleSpace Kate Nash OBE. Kate is the world's leading authority in 'Networkology' - the science behind the growth of workplace networks and resource groups. In 2007 she was awarded an OBE for services to disabled people. In 2013 she was appointed Ambassador to Disability Rights UK.
On being named the most influential disabled person in the UK, Baroness Jane Campbell said: "It's heartening to know that Shaw Trust recognises and celebrates Disabled People's great contribution to society. By doing this they have identified that Disabled People are not only experts in their own situation, but have the same degree of talents about how we live and thrive together in society, as any other citizen. I look forward to watching their future collaboratives with such talented powerful people from the list and beyond! Thank you"
Chris Luck CB MBE, Chief Executive of Shaw Trust, said: “Congratulations to all those on the Power list. The judging panel found it incredibly hard to narrow the list down to just 100 people and were impressed by the standard of nominations. Those selected were felt to reflect the most influential people who are proving that disability or impairment is not a barrier to success. Shaw Trust’s work with the Power List aims to change perceptions of and normalise disability, tackle social exclusion and importantly, provide role models for the young and talented leaders of tomorrow.”
